New music we’re excited about: Backstreet Boys – Bigger

We love really big sounding film scores and for some reason, the Backstreet Boys new single reminds us of the ending to an epic movie. Sought-after producer Max Martin did a great job filling in the sound of this song and the backstreet boys step it up with some nice singing. The harmonies are a little muddy during the chorus but the song is very nice.

Reminds us of: R. kelly – the Worlds Greatest

Billboard 100 Prediction: Honestly, this song will probably not chart in the US but will have much more international appeal. The music video is set in Japan and it seems like distribution is being focused in Asia with this one.

Just a real quick post here, you may or may not know that Gaelan likes being behind the camera as much in front (more? Just my feeling. Shh, don’t tell him I said that.) Anyways, here’s a music video he just directed for an upcoming artist (Twinbrook Studios – same label Sweet 16 is on. Little music fact. Okay I’ll shutup.). So check it out, and if you don’t like it, check it out on mute (Gaelan’s visuals, not music). Also noteworthy (great word), Bert Mueller, (who’s in Sweet 16 duh,) arranged the music. Small family. And why am I the one stuck here doing blog posts? Kidding, I love you guys.

2010 and beyond.

It’s 2010.

And…You’ve probably been wondering where your trusty blog pals have been/why they’ve been neglecting their uber important duty of updating this website. But during all the present shopping, cookie making, awesome times that are the holidays, the Sweet 16 web team was taking a break. But now it’s the new year, and we’re starting things back up again. Woohoo!

We also have some really big news to share. So big. It’s big enough that it will require a whole second title:

So…During the holidays, Sweet 16 has been in the studio. A lot. And what they’ve come up with is pretty cool. Seriously. It’s kinda like if 303h! had a love child with Hellogoodbye. And instead of it being a child, it was a song.

(Yeahhh. That’s one really attractive child.)

And maybe Kesha was involved too. It’s that good. So check back often, for info about when it’s going to come out. Along with some music videos and fun stuff.

So, it’s that time of the year. When you start picking out things that you REALLY REALLY want, but that you’re never gonna get. But that’s the fun right? Some of the tops on my list:

But seriously, what’s on your list? And why not just buy the Sweet 16 EP on iTunes? Yeah, you knew that was coming.

New music we’re excited about: Shakira – Give it up to me

Timbaland seems to always set a new standard for dancibility in his songs and Give it up to me continues that trend. The drums in this song are killer! It’s a combo of organic drum sounds and raw synths. The minimalist production allows Shakira to demonstrate her vocal capacities and the her harmonic work in the chorus sounds great. In this song, less is more. Lil’ Wayne is, well, Lil’ Wayne. This is a classic Timbaland production and is sure to be a huge hit (it’s already climbing the charts as you read this!)

Reminds us of: Single Ladies – Beyonce

Billboard 100 Prediction: This should hit around #5 on the charts although it could face competition from singles off Timbalands own album, Shock Value II.

New music we’re excited about: Jeremih – Break up to make up

Every single Jeremih has released so far has a very unique sound to it and this song is no exception. The production is awesome! From the booming bass drums to chirping clicks over the top, the rhythmic ensemble has a great feeling of movement. It almost reminds us of a Christmas sleigh being pulled by galloping reindeer with bells jingling (weird analogy, we know)! Jeremih’s melodies are catchy and demonstrate a great vocal range. We love the feeling descending pickup notes into the chorus create! Very catchy stuff.

Reminds us of: Jingle Bells

Billboard 100 Prediction: The music video for this song was recently released. We think this song could break top 20, possibly as high as 13.

Weekend over!

So, as many of you probably guessed, all of us at Sweet 16 (okay, fine, mostly me, but Bert and G-man can probably attest as well) have an enormous crush on Taylor Swift. But then again, who doesn’t? So this weekend was doubly great, one because, well, it was the weekend, and two, because T-Swift hosted SNL. And if you haven’t already spent all sunday watching it on repeat, you can now spend all monday doing that. You know we will be.

And just because we’re on the subject of SNL, here’s our personally favorite recent skit, although it also comes with the wildly inappropriate tag.

New music we’re excited about: Tinchy Stryder – Never Leave You

This song has been doing very well across the pond in Britain but has yet to really catch on here in the States. Some of the production elements in this song are similar to ones we like to use in our songs. The string arpeggios in particular sound great. Tinchy’s rap verses aren’t extraordinary but Amelle Barrebah’s descending melodic chorus sounds great. It is also extremely catchy and singable. We love the bounce and energy the beat of this song adds. The full bass drum accompanied with a thick synth propel the bottom sound registers.

Billboard 100 Prediction:
It is questionable whether this will be released to mainstream US radio. If it is released, we think it has enough bounce to make it up into the top 40.
